County residents ready for healthcare rally

Local group to attend single-payer health care rally

Nevada County supporters of single-payer Medicare, in which medical costs are paid through a single government entity rather than health insurance companies, will join other proponents for a single-payer option rally at the Capitol noon Monday.

“I believe health care should be a right in a country as powerful and wealthy as ours,” said Mindy Oberne, event organizer and member of the Nevada County Chapter of Healthcare For All. “To me, once you understand it, it seems like a no-brainer,” Oberne said. “Right now we have multiple payers, which are insurance companies, and if you think about the original idea of everybody pooling together so when people get sick, there’s enough money to take care of those people because healthy people are pitching in, too.

“I know there’s a significant percentage of my premium that goes to huge CEO bonuses,” Oberne said. “With a single-payer system, I know every penny, except maybe three to five percent, is going to go to actual health care.”

Those interested in attending the event can contact Oberne at 530-273-3033. A bus will leave at 9:30 a.m. and return around 3 p.m. at the Kmart parking lot at 111 West McKnight Way in Grass Valley. For information, visit
