The Grass Valley Downtown Association has announced the hours of the ice skating rink that will be installed in downtown Grass Valley for just four days in mid-January.
The rink will be set up on the patio of the Gold Miner’s Inn-Holiday Inn Express at 121 Bank St. from noon to 6 p.m. Jan. 18; from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 19; from noon to 8 p.m. Jan. 20, and from noon to 5 p.m. Jan. 21.
“It’s just a fun way to get the community together and enjoy downtown,” said Julia Jordan, executive director of the Grass Valley Downtown Association.
Admission is free due to donations from sponsors, and skate rentals will be $3.
There is also an ongoing promotion until Jan. 21 wherein with every $50 purchase from a downtown Grass Valley store, a free skate rental coupon is offered.
Local disc jockey Bobby “G” will be playing music for the event, and a life-sized snow globe will be featured, where a photographer will be accepting optional donations for photos, Jordan said.
One of the unique features of the ice skating rink is that rather than involve polluting ice resurfacers, the rink’s surface will be from an environmentally friendly substance that does not require a Zamboni.
“It is a synthetic fiber that is environmentally safe, requires no energy and uses a freezing mechanism that turns the synthetic pieces into ice,” Jordan said. “It is seriously the coolest thing I have ever seen.”
