Pooling funds from multiple sources, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue bought a trailer slated to function as a mobile command unit for the group.
“We will use the trailer to basically be a command post,” said Del Clement, volunteer coordinator for Nevada County search and rescue.
“It will allow us to communicate with search parties and
help make the search more efficient.”
The trailer cost about $12,000 with an additional $21,000 invested to outfit the vehicle with communication equipment, Clement said.
The money came via a grant from the Law Enforcement Fire Protection Council along with assorted community-based fundraising initiatives, Clement said.
“Hopefully, we will be able to minimize the impact of those stranded and lost,” Clement said.
Previously, the search and rescue team was using a defunct ambulance for the mobile command unit or just popped up a card table in the woods near a search, Clement said.
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue is responsible for all operations within the Nevada County jurisdiction that ranges from the low lying foothills to the west, to the Sierra Crest at the eastern end of the county, Clement said.
