Less than a year after it opened in Nevada City, evidence of ol’ Republic Brewery’s success will be marked tonight when its first keg is delivered to Matteo’s Public.
“It’s cool because we got to do it this year,” said brewery co-owner Jim Harte.
The beer will be delivered in a bit of a ceremony at 7 p.m. today to Matteo’s, located at 300 Commercial St. in downtown Nevada City, said owner Matt Margulies.
To mark the first off-site account of ol’ Republic beer, Harte and co-owner Simon Olney will also present Margulies with the brewery’s first tap.
“It is a lot more than us delivering a keg,” Harte said. “It symbolizes us following our model.”
While Harte and Olney had hoped to be distributing kegs within the first year, they almost abandoned the notion when their beer came into such demand as it was served at their brewery, located at 124 Argall Way, behind SPD Market in the Seven Hills business district.
By alternating one day off every other week between them, the pair has averaged 28 kegs of beer per week and brought on four part-time employees to help them serve while they brew, Harte said. With all their beer served to customers internally, Harte said it was a challenge to make enough beer to sell off site. And that took more equipment.
“We got into a stride,” Harte said. “We became very diligent about setting a schedule.”
The brewery also has plans to begin delivering kegs to the Old 5Mile House and Jernigan’s Tap House and Grill.
“We have accounts saying that as soon as we have beer available, they will take it,” Harte said.
Beyond that, Harte and Olney plan to bottle their brews in the coming year.
“This is really an exciting chapter for us and will be just as exciting as when we roll our first cases,” Harte said.
