Grass Valley's Chase Shepherd youngest generator technician at 16

Chase Shepherd has become the youngest certified emergency home standby generator technician at only 16 years old.

“As near as we can tell, Chase is the youngest Generac-certified servicing technician in the country,” said Generac Public Relations Specialist Art Aiello. “Chase Shepherd is certified by Generac to service Generac air-cooled home standby generators, portable generators, power washers, RV generators and some of our larger, liquid-cooled commercial generators.”

Chase has been working with generators, which supply power directly to the electrical circuit breaker box during a power outage, since childhood, as his father, Edison Shepherd, owns and operates High Sierra Electric on Loma Rica Drive in Grass Valley.

“I’ve been doing it since I was a kid,” Chase said. “It’s been a family business.”

He received permission from Generac Power Systems factory out of Wisconsin to take the certification test, which he said required extensive preparation and training of various skills, including mathematics and engineering.

“I was really glad when training was over,” Shepherd said. “I had to learn more math and engine skills and everything for the test.”

High Sierra Electric is a full-service electrical firm, which offers all five American-made emergency home standby generator systems Generac, Briggs and Stratton, General Electric, Kohler and Cummins Onan residential, commercial and RV generators.

Edison said he is proud to serve the community with his son.

“I can’t say how happy we are to be in our community and be able to go out, service and install,” Edison said. “Chase is going to take over the family business some day.”
