TAHOE/TRUCKEE — More snow was expected Friday in the greater Tahoe/Truckee region as the second winter storm of the 2012-13 season continued, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
A winter weather advisory was to remain in effect until 4 p.m. Friday, NWS reports. Additional snow accumulations will create slick and icy road conditions with chain controls likely over Sierra passes.
Lake effect snow is possible on the east side of Lake Tahoe and in the Carson range tonight as well as southeast of Pyramid Lake, according to NWS.
“The cold and unstable nature of this system favors the development of narrow heavy snow bands, which can produce significantly higher snowfall amounts over a small area,” NWS reports. “Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely in the heavy snow bands.”
According to the winter weather advisory, another 2 to 5 inches of snow was expected at higher elevation areas, with 1 to 4 inches possible at lake level.
Temperatures are expected to dip this weekend, with a low of 4 degrees forecast for Truckee on Saturday.
As is the case at Tahoe whenever snow falls, many of the locals, as well as celebrities and professional extreme sports athletes, have taken to social media to express their hashtag-loaded enthusiasm — or, their “stoke” level — about the nearing ski season.
As of Friday morning, the storm that began Thursday afternoon had already dropped 18 inches of snow at Northstar California, according to the resort’s Twitter feed. Northstar is slated to open Friday, Nov. 16.
A foot of the white stuff had fallen as of 9 a.m. today at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows ski resorts. Officials at the resorts anticipate another 4 to 8 inches Friday.
Squaw Valley is slated to open on Wednesday, Nov. 21, and Alpine Meadows is scheduled to open Wednesday, Dec. 7.
Furthermore, Boreal Mountain Resort at Donner Summit — which opened for a few days in late October after the season’s first storm dumped as much as 3 feet in some areas — intends to reopen on Saturday, officials said.
