Construction of the California Highway Patrol’s new Grass Valley headquarters is coming along with much of the main building already completed.
CHP will not immediately own the $14 million, 16,800-square-foot facility being built off McCourtney Road near the Nevada County Fairgrounds.
Instead, CHP elected to pursue a lease-to-own option at a rate of $95,075.66 per month, according to CHP spokesperson Jaime Coffee.
The method allows the agency to leverage a down economy in terms of construction
costs while keeping the property on the tax rolls, the CHP explained to the Nevada County Planning Commission in December 2011.
The facility is being constructed by 3rd & F Street, LP, a Sacramento developer.
The current 5,000-square-foot CHP office located near the intersection of Sutton Way and Brunswick Road was built in 1971 and is shared with the California Department of Motor Vehicles, which plans to build a new $7.8 million building of its own that will be three times larger than the original on the same site.
CHP’s project plans call for the construction of a vehicle service facility; storage building for additional records, radio equipment and an emergency generator; covered parking facility with a fuel island; and a 120-foot tall communication tower, according to planning documents.
The foundation and exterior walls on the main building are completed with work on the interior walls ongoing, Coffee said.
“It’s moving along. We have walls,” Coffee said. “It looks like it’s on the time frames.”
While the main building will house most of the CHP’s operations, such as its public lobby, weapons storage and its automotive bay, a secondary facility is also taking shape where secured storage, bulk evidence and gun cleaning will take place, Coffee said.
The foundation is complete on that secondary structure with exterior walls and the roof being framed, Coffee said.
CHP plans to move into the new facility in March 2013, Coffee said.
“We’re just a few months away from a really nice facility,” Coffee said. “It looks like they are really moving along.”
