Around midnight Monday, a 1-acre vegetation fire broke out in the forest behind Liberty Motors, located in the 600 block of Freeman Lane in Grass Valley, said Nevada County Consolidated Fire District Battalion Chief Jim Turner.
The fire crept within about 10 feet of three travel trailers on the Liberty Motors lot, before firefighters from Grass Valley Fire Department, Ophir Hill Fire Protection District and Consolidated established a defense line and quickly subdued the fire, which was contained at 12:30 a.m., Turner said.
"The firefighters did a great job of putting (the fire) out," said Ernie Shewmaker, Liberty Motors sales manager, who was witness to the blaze. "It was fabulous how quickly they worked."
The cause of the fire is under investigation, Turner said.
There is a homeless encampment in the woods behind the shopping complex. The homeless man residing in that area placed the 911 call and also tried to put out the fire when he came upon it, Turner said.
