The Nevada City man killed Monday night has been identified as Brian Spalding, 41.
Wednesday, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office was continuing to investigate the homicide with the assistance of the California Department of Justice Crime Lab, the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office and Nevada County Search and Rescue. Search and Rescue volunteers combed the roads off Banner Mountain, scouring the roadside for evidence along Idaho-Maryland Road to Brunswick Road in the morning and working throughout most of the day.
Sheriff’s deputies had been dispatched to Spalding’s residence in the 11000 block of Forest View Drive, off Banner Lava Cap Road, at about 11:15 p.m. Monday in response to a call about an assault with several involved, said Sheriff Keith Royal.
According to dispatch reports, Spalding’s mother reported that her son was being beaten by three people. Additional callers reported two men attacking the victim and then leaving on foot.
Deputies arrived to find Spalding lying in the driveway.
“He obviously had been assaulted,” Royal said.
On Wednesday, Royal said in a press release that Spalding had sustained numerous injuries that are consistent with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tuesday, the residences on Banner Mountain and the surrounding streets had been sealed off to allow investigators to recover evidence.
Two other locations also were searched Tuesday, but Royal would not state what the connection might be to the homicide.
Spalding’s autopsy was expected to take most of the day, Capt. Jeff Pettitt said Wednesday afternoon. The preliminary results were not available as of press time.
