Stray dog leads Grass Valley police to homeless owner’s death

A dog running loose while trailing his leash prompted concerns that ended with Grass Valley Police discovering his owner, a local homeless man, dead in his tent.

The approximately 10-year-old husky was spotted near Petco on Freeman Lane Monday morning, said Sgt. Clint Bates.

It was recognized as belonging to a man who was known to live in a tent near Wolf Creek, Bates said.

Because the two reportedly were inseparable, store employees called and asked the police to do a welfare check. The man was discovered dead in his tent; his death did not appear suspicious and possibly was medical in nature, Bates said. His identity had not been released as of press time, pending notification of next of kin.

The husky was taken to the animal shelter after Petco employees gave him a bath.

He is being taken care of there until the man’s next of kin can take him, shelter staff said.
