The Greater Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce has hired former city councilwoman Yolanda Cookson as its executive assistant and membership retention manager.
Keith Davies, executive director of the organization, announced Monday that Cookson will work on membership outreach, and oversee the development of the organization’s chamber office and visitor information center.
“We are very fortunate to have someone with Yolanda’s background join our staff,” Davies stated in a press release. “
She is well-known in the community, has firsthand experience with local economic and governmental issues, and has a professional resume that translates well to the work of the chamber of commerce.”
Cookson was development director for Hospitality House and The Friendship Club in Nevada City, and served for five years as a member of the Grass Valley City Council.
She has served as planning commissioner since leaving the council last year, and was also the city’s representative to the Grass Valley Downtown Association.
“Yolanda has a wealth of experience and knowledge that will be put to good use at the chamber office,” Co-CEO of the chamber of commerce, Robin Galvan-Davies, said. “She is a proven leader, and has helped administer the town’s $9 million budget.” Galvan-Davies added, “the chamber of commerce is now the beneficiary of all the time and energy she has invested in our community.”
According to Cookson, working with the chamber of commerce will allow her to continue the work she has done by supporting businesses in the community.
“I am looking forward to meeting the business owners that I haven’t met yet, to let them know that we are really here to support them,” Cookson told The Union. “Also, working downtown where all of the hubbub is will be very exciting.”
Cookson is currently the campaign manager for Grass Valley Mayor Dan Miller, who is running for California District 3 Supervisor. Referring to her role in Miller’s campaign, Cookson added, “It’s a really great experience, and I believe in him.”
