Heavy rain took a brutal toll on Grass Valley traffic Friday afternoon, with one lane of Highway 20/49 south of the Brunswick exit completely shut down after 1 p.m. for pothole repairs.
California Highway Patrol Officer Earl Cummins said the rain forced a pile of asphalt out of a pothole in the No. 2 lane of southbound 20/49 at about 10:48 a.m. Friday. Crews were then dispatched to repair the pothole.
By the afternoon, the CHP had closed the lane, taking traffic down to one lane from the Brunswick exit to just north of the Highway 20-Marysville exit during a heavy Friday afternoon getaway drivetime.
Pounding rain and road repairs slowed southbound traffic to about 15 miles an hour or less.
Also Friday, one woman was injured when two cars collided on the Empire Street overpass in Grass Valley, just off the Highway 20-Marysville exit of Highway 49.
Grass Valley Police Sgt. Jason Perry said the crash occurred at 1:51 p.m. when the woman, driving a Ford sedan, stopped at the off ramp and then proceeded on a green light to make a left turn onto eastbound Empire Street.
A Honda sedan, traveling westbound on the overcrossing, struck the Ford on the driver’s side rear quarter-panel.
Perry said the Honda’s driver, a man, told officers he failed to see the red light at the intersection.
The woman, who complained of pain, was transported by Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital ambulance to the hospital, where she was cleared by the hospital and released, Perry said.
Both cars were towed, Perry added. He said he had no word on the identities of the motorists involved.
An engine from the Grass Valley Fire Department/Nevada County Consolidated Fire District was also at the scene.
