Woman arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after nearly head-on crash

A woman was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after she drifted into oncoming traffic and hit another car nearly head-on Friday afternoon.

Grass Valley Police officers responded to the crash in the 200 block of Dorsey Drive after being flagged down by a motorist on Sutton Way at just before 1 p.m., said Sgt. Jason Perry.

A woman identified as Nekita Schofield, 27, was driving eastbound on Dorsey Drive when her cell phone rang, Perry said.

Schofield reportedly leaned down to answer it and took her eyes off the road, drifting into the westbound lane and hitting an oncoming car.

“It was not quite head-on,” Perry said. “It was fender to fender. One of the vehicle spun 90 degrees.”

Both vehicles, described as compacts, sustained major damage, Perry said.

Schofield was out of her car when officers arrived and was uninjured. The driver of the other car reportedly was also uninjured. The passenger in the the other car complained of chest pain and was transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.

After investigating, Grass Valley Police arrested Schofield on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, Perry said. Her bail amount was not available at press time.
