Secret of the Center: Keep them coming back for more
April 25, 2013
When Marc Cohn took the stage at Center for the Arts in January, he energized and impressed the audience. The feeling was mutual.
The Center just announced that the singer/songwriter will return to Grass Valley to perform alongside Mary Chapin Carpenter July 19 at Veterans Memorial Building. It also disclosed Wednesday to The Union that Bill Cosby will appear July 5 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.
After his performance a few months ago, Cohn recorded a short endorsement for the Center, in which he called the venue "… one of my favorite new places to play."
When he arrived in Grass Valley for the January show, Cohn mentioned that a previous tour stop at a performing arts center was a lousy experience for him, according to Center Executive Director Julie Baker.
By the time he took the stage, he was already making favorable comments about the Grass Valley venue and its staff. He won over the audience by the second set and made a lasting impression on many in the crowd that evening. One woman was further won over a few days later when he personally commented on her Facebook post to his page, thanking him for the show.
As soon as Baker found out Cohn was touring with Mary Chapin Carpenter, she jumped on Facebook to invite him back to town. While she didn't get a personal reply, the Center for the Arts beat out another venue for the open tour date. Baker acknowledged it may be a coincidence, but she believes Grass Valley won out thanks to his favorable experience. As a result, the Center was able to book an act that fulfills many locals' wish lists. Mary Chapin Carpenter is among the top acts people have told Baker they would like to see in Grass Valley.
Those who want to voice requests for their favorite artists, or just get access to tickets for either Bill Cosby or Mary Chapin Carpenter/Marc Cohn, stand a better chance as members of the nonprofit arts organization. Tickets for both shows go on sale to members only Monday. The general public will have to wait two weeks to purchase theirs.
