I am a hortculturist and I like to play with plants — and native plants in particular. I am also an artist, working mainly with ceramics and producing large-scale gardenware and sculpture. When I started building a garden behind our house in Grass Valley 10 years ago, I thought, “Wouldn’t it would be fun to combine these two interests — native plant horticulture and ceramics — by creating a gallery in the garden.” And that is what my garden has become.
During the spring, our garden gallery busts into bloom in April, when hundreds of clumps of Iris Canyon Snow flower en masse. After that, a succession of blooming native shrubs, perennials, bulbs and annuals produce a spectacular floral display during May and early June. During this time, we love to share our garden with visitors. So a few years ago, when a friend of ours proposed that we do a garden-party fundraiser to raise money to assist people with HIV/AIDS, we thought it was a fantastic idea. And that’s how “Art for Life–a Spring Garden Party and Art Auction” was born.
Our basic concept was to have an art auction set in the garden at peak bloom with lots of fun entertainment options such as local wines, delicious appetizers served by friendly volunteers, live music and garden tours. All the monies raised from the event go to HALO (HIV/AIDS Local Outreach), a collaborative project of CARE Services and Unity in the Gold Country Spiritual Center. HALO was launched in 2010 to address gaps in funding and to help meet the urgent needs of individuals and their families living with HIV/AIDS. HALO monies are used exclusively for the 13 children, 91 adults and their families living with HIV/AIDS in Nevada County.;100 percent of HALO funds are devoted to individuals and families affected by HIV disease.
In 2011, Art For Life raised $6,000 for HALO. Another $7,000 was raised in 2012. Much of this success is due to the many volunteers and donors who contribute to this event. Dozens of local artists, many associated with Art Works Gallery in downtown Grass Valley, donate their work for silent auction.
If you’d like to enjoy this “feast for the senses,” please join us for the third annual “Art for Life–a Spring Garden Party and Art Auction” at our home in Grass Valley from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The cost of admission to Art for Life is $50 per person.
