Old 5Mile House hosts speakeasy revival with DL Lounge

The Old 5Mile House in Nevada City is once again tapping into the speakeasy trend. Young and old are scintillated by the scent of forbidden, the edge of secrecy, the flourish of style.

There’s the secret password whispered at the crack in the door, the naughty giggles of ladies reveling in the excitement of the taboo and of course the chance to dress to the nines and strut irreverently in fine style.

A speakeasy is special. It’s not something you do every weekend. It’s elegant. But most of all a speakeasy is sexy.

Before prohibition, cocktails were considered fine art. When legit spirits were outlawed, the quality went downhill, and speakeasies began adding sugary mixes to cover the bad taste. Unfortunately, that habit persisted. But now a renaissance is underway to revive the art of mixology with quality spirits and fresh fruit mixes, then take it a step further to get creative — the way celebrity chefs have shown us with food — to dream up exciting new cocktail recipes. At the 5, organizers have spent the last year perfecting a new line of artisanal cocktails.

The Old 5Mile House will transform its bar into the DL Lounge beginning at 10 p.m. Saturday for an exciting retro night of gourmet hors d’oeuvres, cutting-edge cocktails and scintillating entertainment.

The Bow-Tie Beauties Burlesque Troupe will perform accompanied by The Earles of Newtown, doing their hot ’20s swing music. Tickets are very limited, so get yours early. Advance tickets and password available at the Book Seller in Grass Valley, Yobobo and Harmony Books in Nevada City for $15. Entry to DL Lounge will require advance tickets and password. Suits or jackets for men, cocktail dresses for ladies required — dress code will be strictly enforced. For information, call 530-265-5155 or visit http://theold5milehouse.com. Special 5Mile Party Wagon rates available at Gold Country Cab at 530-274-8294.
