One Billion Rising THrough Art

The Center for the Arts will host local women artists as part of the One Billion Rising event, bringing community together to support the stopping of violence against women and girls. The paintings and photographs by artists Jilan Carroll Glorfield, Karel Hendee, Sasha St. John, Sabine Borches, Terra Nyssa and Franceska Alexander reflect the essence of women and girls in their many ways of being.

“My work represents women coming through dark times and challenges and emerging happy, strong and radiant,” said Hendee. “They are, in a way, self-portraits and I created them as a way to heal from my own difficulties. ‘Heartwood’ represents how often the breaking of our hearts makes us stronger.”

“The works also represent the freedom of being a women and a girl,” said Glorfield. “I’ve realized nothing brings me more joy than being behind a camera, capturing the truth, beauty, honesty, vulnerabilities, goodness, fierceness, courage, strength and power of girls.”

In Nyssa’s paintings, she questions the responsibility of being a woman, exploring the dimensions of what it means to be of this Earth.

“My painting, ‘Sustaining What,’ looks at culture identity,” said Nyssa. “How are we supporting future generations by the actions we take now?”

Throughout these pieces, there is an honoring of different aspects of being female and what that brings to our daily lives. We all have mothers, sisters or nieces, aunts or grandmothers. Please join us in celebrating women and girls! The exhibit will be up through Feb. 21 at the main gallery for The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley. A reception will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 14) during the One Billion Rising celebration at the Center.
