Crash leaves woman in critical condition

A two-car accident that closed down Highway 49 for about a half-hour Wednesday night left one woman in critical condition.

Gloria Dengler, 77, of Grass Valley was driving southbound on Highway 49 just north of Crestview Drive at about 6:20 p.m. when she began preparing to make a U-turn, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol.

Dengler began making the U-turn directly in the path of a Mustang being driven by Anrea O’Neill, 48, of Auburn, causing O’Neill to broadside Dengler’s Subaru Outback, the CHP report said.

Dengler sustained major injuries and was flown by Calstar to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition Thursday by a hospital spokeswoman.

O’Neill sustained only minor injuries, according to the CHP report.

While medical aid was on its way, traffic was diverted down La Barr Meadows Road from McKnight Way.

Grass Valley and Nevada County Consolidated fire departments, Sierra Nevada Ambulance, Grass Valley Police Department and California Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
