A Nevada City woman has been arrested after allegedly embezzling thousands of dollars from a nonprofit children’s agency.
Robin Jean Gauldin, 48, had been hired by Sierra Nevada Children’s Services, a private, nonprofit child care resource and referral agency, in November, said Grass Valley Police Sgt. Steve Johnson.
Gauldin was handling the agency’s accounts payable, Johnson said.
The nonprofit’s primary role is to connect families in need of child-care options, working with families to help them find caregivers and services.
The organization offers assistance through direct financial support, referrals and resources, access to educational workshops and other technical assistance, as well as maintaining a resource library.
Gauldin allegedly was issuing herself unauthorized payroll checks and forging board members’ signatures on the checks.
She also allegedly used an agency credit card to pay the rent on an apartment in Las Vegas for a family member.
“It’s fortunate that other employees got suspicious quickly and acted on that,” Johnson said.
Those suspicions were initially sparked when Gauldin hid information from other employees, Johnson said.
The agency then launched an internal audit, he added.
“It’s an unfortunate incident,” said the agency Executive Director Dennis Fournier.
Fournier was quick to give credit to the nonprofit’s finance director, saying, “She was on the ball.”
Sierra Nevada Children’s Services initially called the police Jan. 22 to perform a standby while Gauldin was being terminated, Johnson said.
Grass Valley Police then began their own investigation and served a search warrant at Gauldin’s residence Tuesday.
She was arrested and booked into county jail on suspicion of embezzlement by an employee and had been released on $10,000 bail.
Johnson estimated the amount allegedly embezzled at more than $6,000, but Fournier said he believes it might be closer to $2,500.
“We’re hoping we can recover most of that,” Fournier said.
