Auburn man allegedly shoots man, kills self

An Auburn man allegedly shot another man in a dispute before killing himself Sunday morning.

At about 3:50 a.m., Placer County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home off Bald Hill Road after several callers reported hearing gunshots, according to Sheriff’s spokeswoman Dena Erwin.

Deputies found a man inside who reportedly had killed himself with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head. At the same time, deputies were called to Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital because a man had driven himself there with gunshot wounds. The man underwent surgery and is expected to survive, Erwin said.

The second man had gone to the Bald Hill Road address to confront the resident, who allegedly shot him while he was still in his car. The resident then called law enforcement and family members before shooting himself, said Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Reed.

“He believed the other was responsible for some stuff,” Reed said. “We’re still looking at it. There was a fire earlier that night, in which a woman had her apartment burned up. The fire department is looking into whether it was arson, but we’re still sorting out the details.”

Neither man’s identity has yet been released.
