Local potter Rene Sprattling will offer wheel throwing classes beginning in February.
For those who have ever wanted to try “throwing” pots on the wheel, a beginning throwing class for adults series goes from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 5 and runs through March 26. This class will cover the basics of wheel throwing, including wedging, centering, pulling, shaping and trimming, as well as basic glazing techniques. The focus is on learning and practicing new skills with plenty of individual attention. Students will use both kick and electric wheels.
For those who have mastered the 8-inch cylinder and can throw four 6-inch bowls, Sprattling will offer an intermediate series from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 6-March 27. Learn to make the shapes you want. Each class will start with a demonstration and will focus on advancing throwing technique, as well as lid making, trimming, pulling handles and throwing larger sectioned forms. A variety of decorating techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. Course fee includes firing and glazes.
Fees for both courses are $200, includes firing and glazes. The classes will take place at 540 W. Broad St. in Nevada City.
Sprattling has more than 40 years experience as a clay artist and teacher. She was one of the owners of the former Mostly Clay and Fine Crafts in Nevada City. Her work can be seen locally at Art Works Gallery on Mill Street in Grass Valley.
