Chain requirements in effect on Highway 20

Cold temperatures mixed with snow made for some adventurous driving in the upper elevations of the foothills Thursday, transportation officials said.

A couple of minor traffic accidents occurred near the intersection of Highway 20 and Interstate 80 due to snow accumulation in the upper elevations of the foothills, causing Caltrans to implement chain requirements on the highway 9.3 miles east of Nevada City, from Vista Point to Interstate 80.

At 3:30 p.m., a minor injury accident transpired at Lake Spaulding Road, and another accident took place on the eastbound off-ramp connecting Interstate 80 to Highway 20, said Curtis Fouyer of the California Highway Patrol.

“People just need to slow down appropriately,” Fouyer said.

Chains are also required for vehicles traveling on I-80 from Drum Forebay Road east to the Donner Lake Interchange, said Rochelle Jenkins, spokeswoman for Caltrans.

A winter weather advisory is to remain in effect for all elevations in the Sierra foothills from 4 p.m. Thursday overnight until 10 a.m. today.

Snow accumulations of three inches were expected in the upper elevations of western Nevada County, said Karl Swanberg of the National Weather Service. Up the hill, accumulations of six inches were expected along the crest, with as much as 10 inches expected to fall on the peaks in the high country, Swanberg said.

Light precipitation may persist through Saturday morning, Swanberg said, but skies are expected to clear Saturday into Sunday.

Freezing temperatures are anticipated overnight Saturday into Sunday, but daytime temperatures throughout the foothills will creep back toward 60
degrees starting Monday, Swanberg said.
