Caltrans urges preparations for winter driving

As the winter weather approaches, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 3 maintenance crews are preparing for major rain and snowstorms throughout the
season, including winterizing construction projects, preparing snow removal equipment and mobilizing the necessary personnel.

Caltrans is encouraging motorists to be prepared for winter driving conditions, particularly in the snowy Sierra.

Caltrans is offering motorists the following winter driving tips:

Winterize your vehicle

— Check your antifreeze level and make sure it is properly filled and formulated for winter temperatures.

— Check your tire pressure and tread.

— Replace the wiper blades and fill the windshield wiper fluid reservoir; be sure to use a winter formula to help de-ice windshields.

— Have tire chains that are the correct size for your tires amd in good working order and practice installing the chains before heading to the mountains.

— Have a full tank of fuel.

Carry a travel kit

— Have blankets, extra clothing, food and water, towels, a shovel, a flashlight, an ice scraper, a small bag of sand or kitty litter and road flares.

— When traveling with
children, carry small activity
pack to help prevent driver distraction.

— Have a fully charged cellular phone.

Check conditions frequently

— Be aware of inclement weather and potential snowstorms.

— Review Caltrans “Quick Map” for current road conditions at www.quickmap.dot.ca.gov/.

— For chain control information, log onto www.dot.ca.gov/dist3/projects/chainmap/chain_control_text_report.pdf.

— For Interstate 80 and
U.S. Highway 50 follow Caltrans District 3 on Twitter at “@D3PIO” to receive tweets about the current roadway conditions.

Anticipate delays and closures

— Understand that winter weather and road conditions can change rapidly and allow for extra
time.

— Make sure you share the route to intend to take with friends or family.
