Council considers Condon for possible dog park location

A piece of Condon Park in Grass Valley could go to the dogs, which proponents say is good for canines, owners and non-owners alike.

The proposal of a dog park in Condon Park goes before City Council tonight at 7 in City Hall, 125 E. Main St. If council members approve it in concept, it would have to come back again after the completion of environmental clearance, construction plans and other necessary preparations.

The city won't be funding the project or its maintenance, said Mayor Lisa Swarthout - instead the nonprofit group Dogs Run Free propose to pick up the tab.

"Our only potential contribution is the piece of land," she added.

Dogs Run Free would accomplish that through grant funding - likely from the Salter Trust administered by the Nevada County Land Trust and through fundraising, said Dogs Run Free President Andie Reed.

"Our goal is to enhance the quality of life in Grass Valley," Reed said.

Today, Grass Valley dog owners have no places to let dogs run off leash, said former president and founder Jeff Russell.

"People don't have to own dogs to benefit from this because now dogs will have a separate place," Russell said.

Work would include surface improvements and 6-foot-tall fencing, Reed said.

If approved in concept, Swarthout said it would likely be a few more months before the project came back through the planning approval process.

"This is an opportunity for the public to express their opinions on dogs being in the park," Swarthout said.

Also on tonight's agenda:

• A public hearing and ballot count on the question of annexing the Morgan Ranch West neighborhood into the local landscaping and lighting district.

• An electronic sign in front of First Baptist Church, at 1866 Ridge Road. The Planning Commission denied the church's request to approve the sign, and the church is appealing.
