The Center for the Arts is proud to present Nevada County dance communities’ 11th annual showcase – The Starz Show. This extravaganza features more 100 dancers including dance schools, amateur and professional performers presenting pieces in ballet, Irish step dance, break dance, swing, modern, jazz, lyrical and more.
“It’s wonderful for the public to see all the different dance groups in the area in one inclusive show,” said Event Director George Jayne.
Included are performances by AirAligned Aerial Dance Group, Center Stage Dance Studio, Desmond School of Irish Dance, Grass Valley Charter School, Kickin’ and Swingin’, Nevada City Ballet Academy, Penn Valley Dance & Fitness, Sierra Dance Institute and The Movement Alliance Junior Company.
Sierra Dance Institute will present four pieces including “Man of La Mancha,” a lyrical jazz piece “Be Somebody,” “I Wish I Stayed,” featuring adult and student dancers, a duet featuring Chris Foucht and Enissa Harris and a break dance piece – “My Hip Hurts.”
“Our Halau will be dancing ‘He Makana O Na Lei Nani’ in honor of a well loved member, Annette Momi Faulkner who passed away recently,” said hula dancer Dale Deacon. “This dance speaks of a person’s life is like beautiful leis, filled with love and gratitude for your parents, your grandparents, the ancestors and God.”
Swing Dancers from Kickin’ & Swingin’ will present a vintage-swing inspired dance with a new and edgy twist.
The Desmond School of Irish Dance – the only certified Traditional Irish Dance School in Nevada County – performs “Ifacably Irish,” a Riverdance type number showcasing Airielle Cathers.
Showcasing three separate groups, the Penn Valley Dance & Fitness Studio presents “The Light”, a hip hop piece “Def Crew” and an adult ballet to “Dark Waltz.”
The Center for the Arts mission is to encourage and support the Arts in Nevada County. The annual Starz show is a good example of the caliber of the regional talent performance and the value of collaboration in the arts community.
Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students 18 and under and children 5 and under are free. For information, go to http://thecenterforthearts.org.
