‘Knockoffs’ premiers tonight
January 11, 2013
Off Broadstreet Theatre (OBS) is premiering another original work, "Knockoffs at the Pina Colada," this weekend. There is a performance at 8:15 tonight.
In John Driscoll's latest cabaret-style musical theater production, a financially strapped young newlywed couple arrives at a funky little establishment in Bucerias, Mexico, known as The Pina Colada, only to discover the true price of their "free" honeymoon stay.
They are expected to replace the absent owners as celebrity impersonators in a stage show to attract multi-millionaire investors to the town.
Complicating the situation is the realization that her disapproving father is one of the potential investors in the audience.
The entertainment opens with a Jay Leno knockoff, who announces a star-studded program with well-known performers like ABBA, Liza Minelli, Elton John, Christina Aguilera and Antonio Banderas.
"Knockoffs at the Pina Colada" features the talents of well-known OBS performers Jed Dixon, Nancy Keith and Danny McCammon, as well as outstanding vocalist Lyra Dominguez ("Spelling Bee" and numerous CATS productions) making her OBS debut.
Musical selections include "La Bamba," "Pinball Wizard," "Something's Got a Hold on Me," "Peppermint Twist," "Mama Mia," "Friends in Low Places" and "Jailhouse Rock," plus two dozen more popular songs by Elvis, Garth Brooks, Lady Gaga and others.
There are also recreations of popular TV shows "Cheers" and "Star Trek." This production
will run for six weeks only. Discount seats are available this weekend — all seats $2 off regular price. After that, all tickets are $25. Pre-paid parties of 12 or more get one free seat.
The production runs at 8:15 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee Jan. 27. For reservations, call (530) 265-8686.
