Shakespeare’s “King Lear” returns to London and will be broadcast live around the world from the National Theatre Thursday.

Academy Award-winner Sam Mendes directs this new production, broadcast live at Sierra Cinemas in Grass Valley the same day with encore showings May 7 and May 17.

Mendes (“James Bond: Skyfall,” “American Beauty”) returns to the National Theatre to direct Simon Russell Beale (“Timon of Athens,” “Collaborators”) in the title role of Shakespeare’s tragedy.

Sold out in London, this production of one of Shakespeare’s most familiar and studied tragedies on the National Theatre’s Olivier stage, its largest auditorium with seating more than 1,000.

An aged king decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, according to which of them is most eloquent in praising him.

His favorite, Cordelia, says nothing. Lear’s world descends into chaos.

Consistently receiving five stars from critics, the cast of Lear has been called “literally awe-inspiring” by Time Out Magazine.

National Theatre Live is an initiative by the National Theatre to broadcast live performances onto cinema screens around the world.

Since its first season in June 2009, over 1.8 million people have experienced the work of National Theatre Live in 700 cinemas in 25 countries.

“King Lear” will screen at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Sierra Cinemas.

There will be two encore screenings at 3:30 p.m. May 7, and again at 10 a.m. May 17.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for seniors, children, and students with ID. Group rates are also available.
