Wet The Hippo, a collection of Los Angeles' funniest, most twisted and uncontrollable performers, under the direction of Cirque Du Soleil's John Gilkey, will perform in Grass Valley Sunday during a show presented by The Center for the Arts Discover Series.
Nominated for Best Comedy in the 2013 Hollywood Fringe Festival, Wet the Hippo features nine diversely talented players who create sublimely irreverent and beautifully chaotic live shows and very far out short movie films.
In their multimedia live comedy shows, Wet The Hippo incorporates live music and the archetype of the idiot as their platform. The comedians say their aim is to achieve a superior level of stupidity.
"To the point where the audience pretty much wants to kill us. In that moment we feel the true beauty of theater exists," said Comedian/Director John Gilkey.
Gilkey has performed internationally for more than 30 years in circus, variety, comedy clubs, theater and television. He has played a lead role in four Cirque Du Soleil productions; Quidam, Dralion,Varekai and Iris. A star performer at Cirque Du Soleil, Gilkey appeared in more productions than any other clown, appearing live for more than four million people. In 2002 John was invited to Pixar Studios to consult on physical comedy routines that were eventually included in the Oscar winning film Ratatouille.
He is joined by Alec Jones Trujillo, Violist Michael Lieberman, Gabe McKinney, Natalie Palamides, Tim Reid, Claire Titelman, Tyler Watson and Scotch Wichmann.
They will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Off Center Stage in Grass Valley. Opening the night will be local Danny McCammon.
Since 2006 McCammon has been seen on many stages in numerous roles, working both independently and acting for various companies, including: The Foothill Theatre Co., Paul Emery Presents, Synthetic Unlimited, OffBroadstreet, LeGacy Community Asian Theater of the Sierra, and Sierra Stages. He has been in many performances of sketch comedy, improv and stand up as a founding member of Sacramento Comedy Sportz and creator of Improver's Nation, Gods of Comedy and Best Friends Club comedy groups. McCammon teaches drama at the Nevada City School of the Arts, and improvisational comedy for Bitney Springs College Prep. Most recently he appeared in Off Broadstreet theater's musical comedy, "Suds."
Tickets to Sunday's show are a suggested donation of $12 for members of the Center, $15 for the general public and are available at the Center's Box Office in person, by phone at 530-274-8384 ext. 14, online at http://www.thecenterforthearts.org or at BriarPatch Co-op.
