Birds of Chicago in Nevada City
November 22, 2012
The Birds of Chicago will play Nov. 29 at Haven Underground in Nevada City. The North American roots music group is based on the duo of JT Nero and Allison Russell.
The band returns to California next week after having played several festivals this year, including Strawberry, High Sierra, Joshua Tree and the American River Music Fest, according to General Manager P.J. Herrington.
The duo has played together through the years with their own bands, Po’ Girl (Vancouver, BC) and JT and the Clouds (Chicago). In 2011 they recorded “Mountains/Forests” under the JT Nero name. The record received critical raves and created a great deal of excitement for the first official Birds of Chicago album, that was slated for release in October, according to the band’s website.
In July, the Los Angeles Times called Birds of Chicago “this year’s bigest roots surprise.”
In Nero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones, one may hear echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop and classic soul.
Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 8 p.m. Nov. 29. For information, go to birdsofchicago.com.
