30th annual quilt show this weekend
May 1, 2014
Three decades of local quilt-making will be celebrated as Pine Tree Quilt Guild presents the 30th Annual "Springtime in the Pines" Quilt Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley.
More than 300 handcrafted quilts will be displayed in the Main, Northern Pines and Ponderosa Buildings with a free shuttle to provide easy transport between buildings. Admission is just $7, with children under 12 free and no charge for parking.
Featured Artist Lynda Lasich began quilting in 1978, starting with traditional bed quilts for her family. Inspired by membership in Pine Tree Quilt Guild and Mountain Art Quilters, her artistry has expanded to include original designs and beautifully embellished wall hangings. In addition to numerous local awards over the years, the Grass Valley resident won the 2013 California State Fair's First Place, Best of Division and Best of Show Golden Bear Award for her quilt "Pennies from Heaven."
In honor of the 30th Anniversary of the Guild's formation in 1984, a special exhibit will showcase quilts made by charter members and Hall of Honor awardees. Vendors will be selling a variety of quilt supplies and the Country Store will offer bargains on previously owned fabric and sewing items. Tickets will be available for the chance to win the beautiful blue and yellow "Summer Rhapsody" Opportunity Quilt to be given away Sunday.
A Silent Auction on both days will end with bidding on member-made quilt items of every size and shape. The Basket Drawing Sunday afternoon will offer the chance to take home a fabulous basket stuffed with fabric, patterns, sewing tools and fun objects. There's even a "Manly Basket" especially designed to appeal to the guys. Local professional musicians will be on hand, including Dave Riddles and friends
Proceeds from the show enable the Guild to award two $1,500 scholarships to deserving students interested in studying Fine Art or Fiber Arts in college. Guild members also make and distribute hundreds of quilts, walker bags and Christmas stockings each year to community organizations and individuals in need. An Education Outreach committee works in the schools to offer hands-on help in classrooms and to maintain a library of books about quilting that can be shared with children. An active group of Junior Quilters aged 10-17 meets monthly to learn quilting skills with the help of mentors.
