The Haven Underground is once again presenting shows after the Nevada City venue temporarily closed its doors earlier this year.
The Haven kicks things off Friday with Mama Crow, Durian Sex Cult, Cello Joe and special guest Bee Born for an evening of soulful songs and wide swath of world music.
Mama Crow is a soulful songstress. Her sound is a mix of rhythmic, funky finger-picking and string-slapping, guttural blues belts, quick lyrical flow with insidious phrasing. She expresses herself through many styles from neo-soul, blues, jazz, acoustic, folk-rock, electronica, dub-step, down tempo, hip-hop, dance, poetry, according to the Haven Underground.
Durian Sex Cult is a seven-piece, eclectic group of neo-tribal musical magicians. Sounds include, but are not limited to, beatbox, kalimba, sax, jaw harp, African harp, didgeridoo, bass, cello and tribal percussion.
Cello Joe is an anomaly in the world of cellists, according to the Haven Underground. By combining cello with beatboxing, he has created a unique genre: classical hip-hop.
He records live on stage with a loop pedal and produces intricate tapestries of harmony, melody, and rhythm. By beatboxing, throatsinging, singing, plucking and bowing the cello, Cello Joe can mimic many styles of music from dubstep to folk to rock to classical to hip-hop.
Bee Born sings a mix of divine soul, hip hop, downtempo afro futuristic beats, guiding audiences through a journey of celestial channels, frequencies and harmonics. She blends a fusion of world instruments N’goni, Jaw harp, drums, guitar and beat boxing with multiple vocal harmonies, live looping and keyboard synths to create quite the “indigital” experience.
Tickets to the 9 p.m. Friday show are $20 in advance and available at BriarPatch Co-op in Grass Valley.
Saturday the Haven Underground will present Terrakroma. The music collective features Gabriel PachaKroma, Armando Kroma and Willy Electronarcosis. Armando and Gabriel Kroma are the founders of the collective, their music is mainly composed of electronica that maintains a balance between organic and a synthesized sound, deep basses and a progressive electronic influence, very unique in its style, experimenting with an organic arrangement of psychedelic sounds. Terrakroma’s music has a wide range of influences and its reaching far and out, working with major labels and artists.
Tickets for Saturday’s show are also $20 and available in advance at BriarPatch.
