Quest brings ‘Morrie’ to life

Quest Theaterworks will open its final production for the 2013 season this week with “Tuesdays With Morrie.” Based on the bestselling book of the same name, the play is a heartwarming tale of an old man, a young man and life’s greatest lesson, according to producers.

Quest’s production is directed by Scott Ewing and features Jed Dixon as Mitch and Michael Moerman as Morrie. It is written by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom.

The play, staged at the Grass Valley Oddfellows Lodge, relates Albom’s experience with his 78-year-old former sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz, who was dying from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Set in 1995, the play moves through several months of Tuesdays that the two men spent together. Far from being a depressing tale focused on ALS, the show has been described as inspiring, heartfelt and, most importantly, warmly humorous, said Ewing.

“Whether people have read the book or not, there is nothing like live theater to allow people to experience Morrie ‘brought to life,’” Ewing added.

Albom, a successful sports columnist for the Detroit Free Press, contacted his former professor from Brandeis University after 16 years.

A newspaper strike around the same time gave Albom the means to visit Schwartz 14 Tuesdays. Albom wrote the bestselling novel based on those meetings, along with Schwartz’s lectures and life experiences.

Quest Theaterworks production opens Friday and runs through Nov. 17. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. There will be one additional performance in Auburn at 2 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Stella Irving Studio, 120 Recreation Drive in Auburn.

Tickets are $18 for general admission and available online at http://Quest Theaterworks.com, in person at BriarPatch Co-op or by phone at 530-366-5888.

Oldfellows Lodge is located at 113 Church St. in Grass Valley. For information, visit http://Quest Theaterworks.com.
