Marc Cohn returns to Grass Valley

Center for the Arts presents an evening with Mary Chapin Carpenter and Marc Cohn — two singer songwriters on stage together Friday at the Veterans Memorial Building in Grass Valley.

The performance is part of a series of special shows planned together this summer. In this collaboration, the Grammy-winning musicians will draw on material from their vast catalogues and perform favorite songs from other artists.

“I am going to sing on her songs and vice versa. We are also going to do songs that neither one of us wrote, but they are songs that we both like. It gives fans something different, and this is one way to change it up,” Cohn said.

Mary Chapin Carpenter is an American folk and country singer, songwriter and musician. Over the course of a 12-album recording career, Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards and sold more than 13 million records. Recently, she was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

“Songwriting is what I do. This is how I make sense of things. It’s how I seek connection and make my way through the world,” she said.

Marc Cohn is an American folk rock singer-songwriter musician perhaps best known for his song “Walking in Memphis.” He has recorded a total of seven albums and won a Grammy Award.

Cohn is a natural storyteller with a career that took off with the release of his self-titled debut album in 1991. His most recent album, “Listening Booth: 1970,” is a collection of covers from 1970, what he considers the golden age of singer-songwriters.

“There is nothing like performing live. The immediate response from the crowd and the energy exchange is incredible. Singing live is for the moment, and that’s really where the best musical moments happen. It’s very fulfilling, and I love singing live now more than I ever did,” Cohn said.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. Friday concert are still available and cost $40 for members of the Center for the Arts, $50 for non-members. They can be purchased at the Center Box Office - 530-274-8384, ext. 14; BriarPatch Co-op; or online at http://thecenterforthearts.org/tickets/.
