5-year-old boy ejected from wrecked truck

A 5-year-old boy spent his Independence Day holiday recuperating from injuries sustained after being ejected from a vehicle in a rural area north of Nevada City, near the border of Sierra and Yuba counties.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. Monday, Shawn Gray, 27, was driving his 1991 Toyota pickup on Ridge Road outside Grass Valley with a 5-year-old passenger seated in the right front of the pickup.

Neither Gray nor his passenger were wearing seatbelts or other restraints, according to the California Highway Patrol.

As Gray turned onto Pike City Road, CHP’s report indicates that he unsafely allowed his vehicle to drive off the main road onto the shoulder.

He lost control of the pickup and it eventually struck a tree and overturned. The 5-year-old male was ejected from the vehicle and received moderate-to-major injuries.

Fire and rescue personnel responded to the scene, along with a Sierra County Sheriff’s Deputy and CHP personnel.

The 5-year old was transported by helicopter air ambulance to Enloe Medical Center in Chico. Attempts to update his condition Thursday were unsuccessful. Law enforcement officials have not released the boy’s name.

Gray received minor injuries and declined medical treatment at the scene, according to CHP, which is handling the investigation. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a contributing factor in this incident.

Pike City Road was partially blocked by emergency equipment for approximately one hour while emergency crews worked at the scene.
