Eat Local Placer and Nevada, an effort managed by the University of California Cooperative Extension, will hold its first tasting event at the North Star Growers’ Market in Grass Valley Saturday.
The project, which is funded by a grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Block Grant program, is designed to connect local consumers with local specialty crop growers.
“We’ll be providing free samples of a fresh, local salad,” said UCCE’s Cindy Fake. “We have two major objectives – to increase the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables within our local communities and to increase produce sales for local farmers. We’ll be working with the Nevada County Certified Growers’ Market, Nevada County Grown, and other community organizations.”
The tastings feature local, seasonal fruits, vegetables and nuts.
“We’ll also provide recipes and nutritional information,” Fake said.
Customers can also participate in surveys designed to help improve access to local fruits and vegetables.
Finally, the first 100 customers to sample the recipe will also receive a $5 voucher good for purchasing produce at the growers’ market.
The tastings will run from 9 until 11 a.m. (the growers’ market is open from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.) Look for the green Eat Local banner.
After sampling the recipe prepared by UCCE staff and volunteers, customers can find the featured ingredients in farmers’ stalls.
