Top chamber ensemble performs in Grass Valley

Sunday InConcert Sierra presents one of Europe’s top young chamber ensembles, the Zodiac Trio. Originally formed in New York at the Manhattan School of Music, the Paris-based trio is becoming an international sensation. Their vibrant style and enthusiasm are bringing the clarinet-violin-piano instrumentation to the foreground of chamber music.

The trio’s program begins with a work by composer and radio host Peter Schickele, widely known as the promoter of his comic alter-ego, P.D.Q. Bach, but also recognized for his many serious works, including the trio’s opening piece, “Serenade for Three,” a mischievous work with magnetic energy.

Exploring the intriguing influence of storytelling and images in classical music, the Zodiac Trio’s program also presents some of the masterpieces of the violin-clarinet-piano literature, including Belá Bartók’s famous “Contrasts”; Igor Stravinsky’s impish work “A Soldier’s Tale”; Astor’s Piazzolla’s reimagining of Vivaldi’s “Spring” in his “Primavera Porteña”; and Aram Khachaturian’s popular “Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano.”

Zodiac Trio is comprised of Russia’s Kliment Krylovskiy on clarinet, France’s Vanessa Mollard on violin and Japan’s Riko Higuma on piano.

“One of our goals at InConcert Sierra is to provide variety in programming. The piano-violin-clarinet repertoire isn’t heard enough and we’re happy to bring one of the top ensembles performing it. Their music is very accessible, creative, and a definite crowd-pleaser,” said Ken Hardin, artistic director of InConcert Sierra.

Sponsors for this concert are Jeff Leiter, Jerry and Bea Pressler, and Arlene and Jerry Waxman. There is a pre-concert forum with Dr. Aileen James at 1:15 p.m. The winner of the Spring Teen Scholarship will be announced at intermission.

Sunday’s performance begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $26 for adults. Children 17 and under get in free with an adult and are available at BriarPatch Co-op , the Nevada City Box Office at Miners Foundry; or online at www.inconcertsierra.org; or call 530-273-3990.
