‘Casablanca’ screens for State Film Series in Auburn

The Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center announces its Cinema at the State Film Series selection for Thursday (Feb. 21) at the State Theatre — the 1943 Academy Award-winning favorite “Casablanca.”

An undisputed masterpiece and perhaps Hollywood’s quintessential statement on love and romance, “Casablanca” has only improved with age, boasting career-defining performances from Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

Winning academy awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Michael Curtiz) and Best Screenplay, “Casablanca” is one of the most beloved American films. This captivating wartime adventure of romance and intrigue defies standard categorization.

It is the story of Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a world-weary ex-freedom fighter who runs a nightclub in Casablanca during the early part of WWII. One day, to Rick’s great surprise, he is approached by the famed rebel Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) and his wife, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), Rick’s true love who deserted him when the Nazis invaded Paris.

The characters, dialogue and music of Casablanca have become iconic, and the film has grown in popularity to the point that it now consistently ranks near the top of lists of the greatest films of all time.

The film will play at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Tickets are $8 at the door, with a limited number of seats available for advance purchase online at http://livefromauburn.com. Or call the Box Office at 530-885-0156. The box office opens 90 minutes before show time for each performance.
