I may not be an artist, but I’m in a great place for art lovers

I am not an artist, musician, dancer or actor. Although I would like to exercise more creative pursuits, my talents fall to the left of center stage.

An artist’s ability to capture the true beauty of the Yuba River with nothing more than paint, brush strokes and a plain white canvas is nothing short of incredible. So too is the ability to turn a silent theater into explosions of laughter based on an actor’s comic timing or to stir a person to her core with musical performance or to experience the powerful yet graceful movements of dancers.

While I am not an artist, I have been an appreciator of the arts for as long as I can remember.

The past week has been a good one for artists and appreciators alike. The Wild & Scenic Film Festival delivered a stunning and moving weekend of films, art exhibits and music around both Grass Valley and Nevada City. Then earlier this week came the announcement of a new dance company in our community.

Center Stage Dance Studio announced the creation of Ballerinas Unbarred.

“This unique dance company will offer a mix of dance styles and multiple dance levels within the company. Company directors Hollie McGovern, Lotus Brock and Sarah Molaro are looking forward to exploring new original choreography with an emphasis on artistic depth and creative expression with 25 to 30 committed dancers in the community,” according to Center Stage managing director Santia Enos Kroes.

This weekend, the company is holding open auditions for skilled dancers trained in ballet, tap, jazz and/or contemporary. McGovern will work with the principles and advanced adult and teen company members. Brock and Molaro will focus on intermediate- and apprentice-level adult and teen dancers. To round out the experience for company members, guest choreographers will be invited to participate as well.

The company will perform at Nevada Union High School’s Don Baggett Theatre.

Open auditions are this Saturday at Center Stage Dance Studio, 130 W. Berryhill Drive in Grass Valley (upstairs at Club Sierra). Teen auditions are from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and adult auditions are from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

“We’re excited to connect with other dancers in our community and create an artistically diverse, professional dance company,” said co-director Molaro. For details about the audition or information, go to www.CenterStageGrassValley.org or email the company directors at BallerinasUnbarred@gmail.com.

I don’t think I can dance. But before I die, I want to be an artist.
