Holiday celebration through dance

The Center for the Arts celebrates the holiday season with its seventh annual WinterDance community concert this weekend. The evening includes winter-themed pieces by nine local dance groups with everything from ballet to Irish dance.

“It’s great that the Center can offer an inclusive holiday dance production,” said Artistic Director George Jayne . “It’s a gathering of the dance groups and great fun to see what everybody’s been working on.”

New this year will be a Grupo de Danza Folklorica Ecos y Rincones de Mi Tierra, featuring colorful costumes dances with vigorous arm movements and intricate rhythmic foot work. The group’s choreographer, Leyda Morales says, “Grupo de Danza Folklorica Ecos y Rincones de Mi Tierra is the result of parents’ desire to preserve their Mexican heritage.”

The Desmond School of Irish Dance returns with a newly choreographed piece — “Ifacably Irish” — a slip jig in the Irish stepdance tradition.

“We’ve created a special lighting design, featuring black lights that will highlight the dancers and their costumes,” said Kathleen Desmond of the Irish stepdance piece.

Nevada Union graduates Andrea Amdall and Kendall Adams will perform a contemporary duet as part of Sierra Dance Institute’s student choreography. Also included in SDI’s repertoire will be the holiday classic “Snow” from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker.”

Center Stage Dance Studio brings a jazz production, a lyrical jazz piece and a tap dance for this year’s concert.

The Movement Alliance School will present two pieces by its junior company. Dancers age 17 to 20 will perform “All for Love” choreographed by Marissa Hernandez and “Halo” choreographed by Aubry Puetz.

“WinterDance has become a great annual tradition at The Center,” Center Executive Director Julie Baker said. “It’s a wonderful showcase for the regional dance community in the holiday season.”

Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for children 6 to 12 and free for those 5 and under.
