Saturday and Sunday (with call-backs on Monday), Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) will hold auditions for “Journey to the West” at the Nevada Theatre from 9 a.m. to noon.
“Journey to the West,” based on the popular 16th century Chinese novel, is written by Tony-award winning playwright Mary Zimmerman, and will be directed by veteran Diane Fetterly.
“Journey to the West” is a fascinating adventure story about a pilgrimage from China to India in search of sacred Buddhist scriptures. This journey to enlightenment is taken by the “Monk,” the “Monkey King,” the “Pig” and the “River Monster.”
According to Fetterly, this fable has broad physical humor, lyrical poetry and a myriad of characters — human, monstrous and divine.
“Journey to the West” is a play appropriate for the whole family and will be produced from April 11 to May 4, at the Nevada Theatre.
“Journey to the West” will have original music composed by Tynowyn and choreography by Michael Baranowski. Other members of the creative team include Teresa Shea, for costume and set design, Tim Dugan for lighting design, Katherine Scourtes for properties design and Sara Quay for hair and makeup design.
CATS seeks actors of all ethnicities for a large ensemble cast. Martial arts and acrobatic skills are a plus! Children will be considered for Monkeys, Disciples, Moksa, Peach Girls and Demons.
Everyone in the show is also involved in three “production numbers,” which involve singing as a group. There are more than 50 roles in the show, and action flows quickly through 41 scenes. Come dressed comfortably for movement and participate in singing and reading from the script. No monologues required. Songs will be taught. Roles will be cast gender neutrally. Interested actors should register by choosing one of the dates and contacting Artistic Director, Lisa Moon at (530) 273-6362, or at email@example.com.
