The Del Oro Theatre will offer a truly beloved Christmas favorite this holiday season when “The Nutcracker” ballet is shown on the big screen Dec. 3. Performed by the world-renowned Mariinsky Ballet troupe at the Russian Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, this season’s Nutcracker returns to its Russian roots at the theatre where Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” made its worldwide debut in 1892.
This performance features rising stars Alina Somova as Clara (Masha in the original Russian ballet) and Vladimir Shklyarov as the Nutcracker. Conducted by Valery Gergiev, this timeless production of “The Nutcracker” opens with a Christmas Eve party and a young girl, Clara, being given a nutcracker doll by her godfather, Drosselmeyer.
Later in the evening when Clara sleeps, she finds herself in the midst of the Nutcracker’s battle against the Mouse King and his army of mice. Coming to Clara’s aid, the Nutcracker is transformed into a prince and journeys with her to an enchanted island where spectacular celebrations take place in their honor.
The Mariinsky Theatre has a long and illustrious history and has been home to such luminaries as ballet dancers Anna Pavlova Vaslav Nijinsky, Rudolf Nureyev, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. It is where George Balanchine set out on the road to art. Known as the Kirov Theatre for much of the last century, it returned to its original name in 1992.
