30th Mother’s Day Plant & Garden Sale set for Sunday in Nevada City
May 12, 2017
Sunday marks the 30th annual Mother's Day Plant and Garden Sale at the Miners Foundry in Nevada City.
Tens of thousands of plants, bushes and trees will be for sale, plus landscaping, fencing, garden furniture and décor. All the vegetable starts, herbs and other edibles are organic. There will also be flowers, annuals, perennials, succulents, drought-tolerant plants, native plants and even exotic cacti.
Food vendors will also be on hand for the event, which begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m., at the Miners Foundry 325 Spring St., Nevada City.
The Mother's Day Plant and Garden Sale started 30 years ago as a fundraiser for KVMR-FM radio station. Ray Diggins, who said he was the radio station's manager during those days, and when he decided to leave, the sale was going to be canceled. He took the helm of the event in 1991.
Many Nevada County gardeners get prepared for the growing season at Sunday's annual Mother's Day Plant and Garden Sale, now in its 30th year. The popular event is a labor of love for Ray and Cheri Diggins, who own Grizzly Hill Organic Farm.
"It's nice to hear how happy customers are with the plants, how strong they say the plants are, how they can tell they're grown with love," Ray Diggins said. "We put a lot of love into every plant. You can't pot up 50-thousand plants without loving them."
