3 original songwriters paired with wine & cheese at Open Book in Grass Valley
July 13, 2017
The Open Book will host a special Songwriters Showcase on Sunday July 16th from 5 to 8 p.m. The Open Book is at 671 Maltman Dr. next to the Sierra Mountain Coffee Roasters in Grass Valley. Three local singer songwriters, Gary Parks, Kellie Garmire and Greg Case will play two sets each of their original tunes with an intermission featuring wine and cheese. Admission is $10.
Parks began writing his first songs as a teenager in the mid-1960s. In 1983 his album "Toneweave" of original songs, in the folk jazz style, was released and received airplay on public radio. He performs locally as part of the Gary & Eva duo and quartet, and is always writing new tunes.
Garmire is a native Californian and Grass Valley resident who has been writing since her childhood. Her songs are introspective, moody, and truthful. Her vocal stylings have been compared to Linda Ronstadt's, but her sound is unique, soulful and smooth.
Case is a retired firefighter who moved to Nevada City two years ago. He writes traditional Americana music playing slide blues songs on dobro, finger picking Delta blues on acoustic guitar, as well as some all out rock songs. His combo "Raw Blues" plays locally and is not to be missed.
These three musicians all play various venues in the area, and of course they all play mostly cover tunes to please the patrons, who love to hear their favorite familiar songs. The Open Book is a special room that is intimate, quiet, and made for listening intently, and therefore is the perfect venue for original songs to be presented. These artists feel fortunate to be able to play there and sing their songs to an appreciative audience.
