Holly Near to perform, speak in GV

Performer and outspoken ambassador for peace and social change, singer/ songwriter Holly Near is planning a stop in Grass Valley for a Center for the Arts performance at 8 p.m. Saturday. Near is also a featured speaker at the weekend’s Passion Into Action conference presented by See Jane Do.

Activist folk duo emma’s revolution will join Near.

Often cited as one of the founders of the “women’s music” movement, Near has been compared to some of her contemporaries, such as Joan Baez, Janis Ian, Mary Travers and Joni Mitchell. With 26 recordings of her own, including the seminal “Imagine My Surprise,” Near has collaborated with Ronnie Gilbert, Pete Seeger, Bonnie Raitt and Cris Williamson among others.

The Nobel Peace Prize-nominated entertainer, teacher and activist is defined by her unwillingness to separate a passion for music and a passion for human dignity. Near famously asked, “Why do we kill people who are killing people to show that killing people is wrong?”

Near began singing in public at the early age of 8, continuing on with a professional career that included numerous performances in film and television, such as acting stints on “The Partridge Family” and “The Mod Quad” and a run in the Broadway production of “Hair.” Torn between acting and singing, Near chose to pursue her love of music as a means to articulate the social conditions of the world community.

For 40 years, Near has made an important impact on social change movements that cross a number of cultural and world boundaries. Her legacy is documented in historic papers housed as part of project called “History of Women in America” at The Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library at Harvard University.

Tickets are $22 members, $25 non-member. Attendees of the Passion into Action Conference receive member price. Tickets can be purchased at The Center Box Office (530) 274-8384, ext. 14, BriarPatch Co-op or online at www.thecenterforthearts.org.
