ART OnSite calls for applicants for Deer Creek Tribute Trail in Nevada City

Beginning Monday, the Nevada City ART OnSite/Tribute Trail project will accept qualifications submittals from artists for original works to be installed along the city’s Deer Creek Tribute Trail in fall 2013. Interested artists may apply online at www.artonsite.org.

The deadline for applications is Nov. 23.

ART OnSite/Tribute Trail is one of 80 projects across the nation recently funded through the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Our Town Initiative. Project organizers are offering 10 $2,500 stipends to selected artists whose work uniquely interprets the culture, history or ecology of Nevada City’s Deer Creek watershed.

Qualifications will be reviewed and artists selected by a panel of regional art professionals, including William L. Fox, director of the Center for Art and Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno; Constance Lewallen, adjunct curator at the UC Berkeley Museum and Pacific Film Archive; Renny Pritikin Sr., adjunct professor at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco; and Kathryn Reasoner, executive director of the diRosa Art Institute in Napa.

“We are delighted to have such a diverse and highly regarded panel of jurors for our premier exhibit,” said Nancy Fleming, ART OnSite steering committee chair. “Their collective experience in the area of public and environmental art is absolutely essential for a project like ours.”

The ART OnSite/Tribute Trail exhibition is expected to open next year in the fall when selected original art works will be installed along the Deer Creek Tribute Trail in Nevada City.

The Deer Creek Tribute Trail, a collaborative project of Nevada City, Nevada County, The Sierra Fund and 15 other local and regional environmental, educational and historic organizations, is a 9-mile cultural and ecological multi-use trail that opened in 2011.

ART OnSite/Tribute Trail is building upon this collaboration by introducing environmental art works along the Deer Creek Trail corridor.

ART OnSite is currently raising funds to match a $25,000 National Endowment for the Arts Our Town Initiative grant.
