Brook unveils new series

How does an artist choose a subject matter to paint?

LeeAnn Brook feels that what we connect to on a personal level is where it all starts. Growing up at a lake in the countryside of Connecticut, her personal inspiration has always come from water, be it a lake, pond, river or ocean.

Focusing on a new body of work over the past year, she will unveil her newest series entitled “Immersed” on the Fall Color Open Studios Tour Saturday and Sunday, and again Oct. 13 and 14 at her downtown Nevada City studio.

“After travelling to Italy this year, I returned with a strong desire to go deeper with my work, allowing more time to explore what resonates with me. The rich colors of this art-focused trip of centuries-old frescoes, sculptures and paintings of the Italian Renaissance were imbedded in my mind. I knew it was going to affect my work,” Brook said.

Brook travelled and painted in Italy this spring, on a three week journey covering Venice, Florence, Tuscany and Rome. Upon return, she applied the experience directly to her own style of work, carrying through a depth and color range into her contemporary landscape paintings that has a serendipitous similarity to the intense colors of Italy.

Her new series focuses on the richness of regional landscapes that include the Yuba River, Deer Creek and Hirschman’s Pond. With eight new Yuba River paintings and seven new paintings of Hirschman’s Pond, Brook also will feature several new paintings in her series of local gardens.

You can see a slideshow of her process at her studio which will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Open Studios Tour Oct. 6, 7, 13 and 14. Brook’s studio is number 22 on the Open Studios Tour map which can be downloaded at www.openstudiostour.org.For more information, call (530) 265-6817, or visit www.brookdesign.com/fine-art.
