“Mama Mia!” focuses on Greek food, wine

On Friday, Miners Foundry Cultural Center and the Nevada City Film Festival presents the film “Mamma Mia!” plus food and wine from Greece. Part of the “Food & Film Series,” which pairs a popular film with a unique dining experience, “Mamma Mia!” is the sixth event in the monthly series that has also included an Italian feast with the classic film “Big Night” and French crepes with the award-winning film “Amelie.”

Based on the popular Broadway play, “Mamma Mia!” stars Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth and is set on the colorful Greek island of Kalokairi, also known as Skopelos. In island legend Skopelos was founded by Staphylos or Staphylus (Greek for grape), one of the sons of the god Dionysos and the Princess Ariadne of Crete. Perhaps because of the legend of its founding by the son of the god of wine, the island was known throughout the ancient Greek cities of the Mediterranean Sea for its wine. The origins of winemaking in Greece go back 6,500 years, and evidence suggesting wine production confirms that Greece is home to the oldest known grape wine remnants discovered in the world and the world’s earliest evidence of crushed grapes.

Michael Pavlidis, the Grass Valley based West Coast Regional Sales Manager of Athenee Importers, the largest importer and distributor of fine wine, spirits and beer from Greece and Cyprus in the U.S., will be on hand to speak about the changing Greek wine market. Two Greek wines will be available including a 2010 Veriki Estate Hatzimichalis and a Young Vines of Xinomavro.

Hatzimichalis, a unique blend of the Greek noble variety, Robola, with Chardonnay. The Young Vines red is a purple red color that is a complex, typical bouquet of red small fruits including cherry, blackberry, and plum. The Young Vines vineyards are located at Trilofos and Fytia, at southern tip of the appellation of Naoussa, with a soil, where there are slivers of limestone bedrock and volcanic soils.

Attendees can pair these wines with Mediterranean dishes such as Greek salad, dolmas, falafels, mezze platters, and of course baklava, all made fresh by Nevada City Marketplace.
