A Yuba City man remained in critical condition Friday after a vehicle collision in Penn Valley Thursday afternoon that also sent two Nevada County residents to the hospital.
Victor Mendez, 57, was driving westbound on Highway 20 at a high rate of speed at just before 4 p.m., according to a report by the California Highway Patrol.
Mendez’s vehicle veered out of control and entered the eastbound lane while rotating clockwise, the report said. As Mendez’s vehicle was sliding sideways in the eastbound lanes, it was broad-sided by the front of a Toyota 4Runner being driven by Johna Orzalli, 50.
Mendez was flown to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with moderate to major injuries and was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon.
Orzalli and her passenger, Dalton Brown, 22, were taken to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital with major injuries. Brown was treated and released, and Orzalli was reported to be in fair condition.
One lane of Highway 20 was closed for approximately two hours, and the accident remains under investigation. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to have contributed to the collision, according to the report.
