Fugitive arrested at Scotts Flat Lake

A Grass Valley man who has been on the lam since he escaped, handcuffed, from a patrol vehicle Monday and who then fled from police Tuesday night has been arrested.

John William Grimes, 31, is in custody in lieu of $200,000 bail. Further details were not yet available.

The authorities have been searching for Grimes since about 1 p.m. Monday, when he reportedly escaped from the back of a patrol car in the 11000 block of Ridge Road.

Nevada County sheriff’s deputies had been dispatched to the residence for a domestic violence call and detained Grimes.

While the deputies were continuing their investigation, Grimes was able to escape and flee on foot.

A BOLO was issued, as well as a “city watch” phone alert; Grimes was described as having blond hair and blue eyes, and anyone with information was encouraged to call the sheriff’s office at 530-265-1471.

Grass Valley police officers had responded to East Main Street and Sierra College Drive a little after 7 p.m. Tuesday, after a caller reported seeing John William Grimes, 31, leaving a liquor store on foot.

Officers spotted a man matching Grimes’ description in the wooded area behind Chapa De, and he took off, said Sgt. Steve Johnson.

“He was about 50 yards away,” Johnson said. “It’s not 100 percent confirmed that it was Grimes.”

The man who fled from the police reportedly was wearing a black hoodie with orange on it, according to dispatch reports; Grimes was last seen Monday in a grey button-down shirt with purple stripes.

The fleeing suspect “no longer had silver bracelets on,” Johnson said, adding that it is not uncommon for people to have handcuff keys.

“We encounter them routinely, stashed in pockets or on key rings,” he said.

Officers searched the woods and ended up arresting another man they reportedly found hiding in an abandoned building.

The man, who was identified by Johnson as a local transient named Isaac Joseph Joe, reportedly pulled a pocket knife in an aggressive manner but dropped it when the officer identified himself.

Joe, 31, ended up going to jail on suspicion of trespassing, exhibiting a deadly weapon and possessing drug paraphernalia.

He was booked and released on $2,500 bail.

According to Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal, a number of tips had placed Grimes in a variety of locations, including Cascade Shores.

Grimes is scheduled to appear in court on a number of criminal cases on June 16 — a petty theft charge stemming from a February arrest, charges of spousal abuse and damaging a phone in an April arrest and a violation of probation in a June 2013 case in which he allegedly tied up and assaulted a man in a robbery.

In that case, he had pleaded no contest to a burglary charge in return for 180 days in county jail and three years’ supervised probation.
