Reggae to take root at Miners Foundry Saturday

Known as “the Musical Alchemist,” Perfect Giddimani is making a name for himself on the root reggae/dancehall scene. Miners Foundry Cultural Center in association with JahMikey One and Git Split Records will present Perfect Giddimani in an all ages show Saturday.

Doors open at 8 p.m. The show will also include Bobo David from Judgement Yard Jamaica with a live band featuring members of Ikronik, plus musical juggling from JahMikey One Sound. Perfect is considered one of the greatest gems of modern roots reggae music. His overall compositional style may echo the pop mechanics of Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, and the Wailers, but he also has Max Romeo’s dramatic flair and the attitude of Big Youth and U-Roy.

Born Greg Rose, he grew up in the cool hills of Bamboo in the parish of St. Ann. His father owned several jukeboxes, giving him full exposure to the rhythms of Jamaica. He counts Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Gil Scott Heron, Sade and Toots Hibbert as some of his early favorites.

In early 2008, Perfect released his second album, “Born Dead With Life” on Irievibrations Records. It was a concept album concerned with the history of slavery. A collection of singles made up Perfect’s 2009 album, “Karma.” With lots of popular tunes on familiar riddims, “Karma” was the beginning of his shift towards the alt/pop world.

2010 saw the release of the multi-genre album “French Connection,” produced by Sherkhan for Tiger Records/Chalice Palace Music, while 2011 brought us “Back for the First Time” on the Lustre Kings label.

In 2012, Perfect was poised to reach a new level in his career with the release of “Journey of 1000 Miles” on Dynasty Records.

Tickets to Saturday’s show are $20 in advance, $25 at the door and are available online, in person or by phone at the Miners Foundry, 530-265-5040, and at BriarPatch Co-Op. For more information, go to www.minersfoundry.org.
